Visual language is the primary form of communication in the modern society. But what is it that makes it so universal? If I had to put it in one word, it would be expression.
As the years go by, we tend to crave that visual expression more and more. If you think about the progression of the internet, we started communicating with text, then photos and now the format of moving image has taken the world by storm. A natural progression. Movement is an extra layer of communication that mankind has been experimenting with, since the Paleolithic age. Maybe movement is a primal part of our DNA that makes us understand the world in a more detailed way while entertaining our senses.
Even before primary school, I remember myself drawing frames of a fighting sequence and then taping all the papers together to create a visual progression of the story. Visual storytelling has always been dominating my expressive nature, which probably explains my love for the filmmaking artform.
For me, art is touching somebody's soul, without having to explain anything. If you can evoke emotions, then you have achieved to make art. I live by this code and it has always been my primary goal. Expressing myself while engaging with the audience in a meaningful way.
Filmmaking is the endless pursuit of visual expression. Α roller coaster ride in which I'll always be the passenger.
